One of the factors contributing to the increase in spending is the mounting costs of traffic
acquisition. "Fifty percent of search engine marketers rank Web site traffic as their preferred

Google's "Do No Evil" policy lands it in trouble with China
Google's main search engine was no longer accessible in most Chinese provinces due to censorship
efforts, and that it was completely inaccessible throughout China on May 31. Brin said Google
is trying to improve its censored search service, Google.cn, before deciding whether to reverse
course. He said virtually all the company's customers in China use the non-censored service.

Yahoo CTO Farzad Nazem ranks seventh best paid executive
Yahoo Chief Technical Officer Farzad Nazem will continue to receive an annual salary of $500,000
through 2007, a potential cash bonus of $1 million, an option to purchase 900,000 shares at $31.59
each and 50,000 restricted stock units based on performance. He was ranked seventh with just more
than $24 million in total compensation last year in the Chronicle survey.

Comparison shopping sites are attracting more and more users
Comparison shopping engine vendors have developed new services to support wireless devices, such
as cell phones. Mobile searching also offers users new functions: they can have their camera phones
scan bar codes with their phones for instant price checks. Scanbuy and NextCode have developed such
features and comparison shopping engineers are reportedly ready to incorporate them into their
services. The improvements have attracted more customers, which in turn has lured the industry
titans into the market: Microsoft, Google and Yahoo all have been trying to build up businesses in
this segment.
